Tamil movie - Arunachalam

SuperStar RajiniKanth in Arunachalam

PART - 1

PART - 2

PART - 3

Review:

It has been a recent trend for Rajnikanth's movies to have the name of the hero as the movie title. "Arunachalam" is not an exception.

"Arunachalam" is a story about a village hero (Rajnikanth) who has 2 brothers and a sister and a happy family. Ravichandran and K.R.Vatsala are his parents. "Vedavalli" (Soundharya) is the daughter of Jaisankar and 'Venniraadai' Nirmala. Nirmala is Ravichandran's sister and they all come to Ravichandran's home for Rajni's sister's wedding. That gives the opportunity for Soundharya and Rajnikanth to fight first, then to kiss and fall in love with each other.

Rajnikanth finds himself to be an orphan by interval. He goes out of the village. He goes to Madras where he meets Janakaraj, who gives him a job. By some magical situation Rajni discovers himself to be a son of a (dead) millionaire - through Visu. Visu is the guardian of Rajni's father's trust. If Rajni wants his inheritance, he has to follow certain rules. He can get an inheritance of 3000 Crore Rupees if he can spend 30 crores in 30 days. The conditions are: no contributions to charities, not to own any assets at the end of 30 days and above all, no one else should know about this! Receipts should be provide for all the expenses. If Rajni fails to spend the money according to the rules, all the money will go to his father's trust which is managed by V.K.Ramasamy, "Nizalgal" Ravi, Kitty and Raguvaran. These four form a team of "villains". They want to spoil Rajni's efforts and get all the money for the trust and kill Visu. Ramba is Visu's daughter and she is appointed as the accountant for Rajni for 30 days.

What happens next is the main part of the story. Rajni tries hard to spend his money and many times, the money comes back! He spends on Horse races, lottery tickets, makes a movie with Senthil as the hero and he even starts his own political party with Janakaraj being the candidate. All these events are good opportunities for situation comedies.

Does Rajni win this competition? Does he get all the 3000 Crore rupees for himself and live happily ever after? (see it in silver screen!) is the rest of the story.

The first half of the movie is an original Tamil story. The second half of the story has been lifted from the English movie "Brewster's Millions" (with Richard Pryor in the lead role). I saw "Brewster's Millions" just before watching Arunachalam. See the bottom of this review for my "Review of Brewster's Millions" . Eventhough the story has been borrowed, it has been modified well to suit the Tamil culture and audience.

Super Star Rajnikanth satisfies all the requirements of Rajni fans - style, acting, good dance movements, fights and comedy. What more can one ask for? As usual Rajni's comedy acting is enjoyable. Particularly his comedy with Senthil is Superb. His love scenes with Soundarya is very interesting.

Soundarya is not only beautiful, but she also acts well. Her love scenes with Rajni is worth mentioning again.

Senthil deserves a special mention for his decent comedy. On several scenes, he is really funny. Janakaraj has been given a good role after a long time. He has done it well too.

Vadivukarasi has done a totally different role in a superb way.

Other actors/actresses who have done good acting includes: Jaishankar, Ravichandran, V.K.Ramasamy, Raghuvaran, Manorama, Visu and Crazy Mohan.

Eventhough the dialogues by Crazy Mohan are not upto the level of "Avvai Shanmugi", they are good and they bring laughes throughout the movie.

The fight scenes are not that great. There are not different from any other masala tamil movie.

If making a typical entertaining Rajini movie is all that Director Sundar C. wanted, he has succeeded in that. The movie flows smoothly. The editing is also good, particularly the several slow motion scenes in this movie have been done well.

Also, it has been a recent trend to show the shooting scenes at the end of the movie (thanks to "Jackie Chan" movies for inspiration!). At the end of this movie also, there are some shooting scenes which are interesting to watch.

Music is by Deva. The two songs which are good are: "Athanda Ithanda.." (reminds us of "Naan Autokaren" from Batcha) and "Nagumo ai Sugamo..". Deva could have done a better job. The director has compensated for the music by filming the songs rich.

With the one exception of songs, "Arunachalam" is an entertaining movie.

Double Visil (for Rajni)

Tamil movie - ABCD - view online

Cast: Shaam, Sneha, Aparna, Nandhana
Direction: Saravana Subbiah
Music: Imman

PART - 1

PART - 2

Review:

After Citizen ,almost a couple of years ago, director Saravana Subbiah makes a strong comeback with ABCD. Unlike his debut venture which was a 'commercial mass' film, ABCD dwells on human relationships and is more emotional.

Taking a leaf out of K Balachander's movies, Saravana Subbiah has thrown light on troubles faced by woman in the society today. Interestingly, the movie has very little characters, and the sequence of events that they come across in their life makes up the story.Shaam (Anandh), an MBA graduate, runs from pillar to post in search of job. He stays in the house of a old Brahmin whose daughter Chandra (Sneha) returns home following the death of her husband (Saravana Subbiah), who had been torturing her since their wedding. She slowly gets attracted towards Anandh for he shows love and affection towards her.

Meanwhile, Anandh comes across Bharathy (Nandhana) in a bus who misplaces her academic certificates. Bharathy is a woman with revolutionary ideas and looks after her whole family. A sequence of events brings them close leading to Nandhana developing love towards him.Meanwhile, Anandh comes across one Divya Daisy (Aparna). She is an orphan brought by up church and goes to find a job herself and settles in life all out of her own efforts. Anandh rescues her from a accident and rushes her to a hospital. Over a period of time, they become very close friends eventually leading to Divya Daisy opening her heart to Anandh.Caught in a tight corner, who Anandh decides to marry forms the rest.

An interesting story with some good performance make it engrossing.Shaam has given a decent performance playing a happy-go-lucky youth who respects the sentiments of others and rushes to the help of his neighbors. Sneha has put up a matured show. Donning the role of widow, Sneha fits the bill well. Impressive has been young music composer D Imman, who has utilized the opportunity well to come up with a decent performance. On the flip side, towards the second half, a lag in the screenplay could have been avoided. The director has thrust a 'racy song' and a stunt sequence as commercial compromise. The director could have avoided Vadivelu's comedy sequences which hamper the flow of the movie. But, overall, Saravana Subbiah deserves a pat for coming out with a decent film when masala movies are the order of the day.

Part-4

Cast: Vijay, Trisha, Prakash Raj, Vivek, Manivannan, Vijayakumar, Nasser, Devan, Sita
Direction: Ramana
Production: Shoba Chandrasekar
Music: Vidyasagar

Review:

Revenge dramas always hold an attraction to the average cine-goer. Retaliation or retribution stories are, in a sense, the stories of the underdog. It is delayed vigilante justice. This idea, plus some interesting suspense, makes for interesting viewing in Aathi. It is not just the hero who is bent on revenge. The heroine too is. Though the splash of gore may be slightly high, the film more than passes muster as Vijay once again seems in fine fettle. Director Ramana has also not tried anything extravagant. He knows Vijay is the trump, and hence used it pretty handily.

The movie starts dramatically with Anjali (Trisha), clad in spotless white, thrusting a shining knife into Devan. As blood drips out, it never stops all through.

The story is about Aathi (Vijay), is brought up in New Delhi (by foster parents Seetha and Manivannan). He comes to Chennai apparently to study. But he is thirsting for revenge on those who had bumped off his parents and close relatives of uncles and aunts who were all living together in a joint family.

Anjali, aided by her uncle (Nasser) is also in the same college. She is also one a revenge mission. Her reason too is the same. And her target is also the same. Why? Well, there is a smart bit of suspense. Aathi and Anjali fall in love and set out on the trail of their antagonists.

So what is the real identity of the duo and does the arch villain (Sai Kumar) manage to have the last laugh. After plenty of rapier thrusts and blood-splattered moments, you find out. Vijay just ambles through a role that allows him to do his typical stuff---dance, fight, humor around. He is such a consummate performer that there is more confidence to his work these days. His chemistry with Trisha also shows. They cut a fine pair and have fun. Vijay has also tried some funky hair coloring. Vivek’s comedy, though repetitive, brings the house down in some places. Prakash Raj plays a typical cop.

The rest of the cast have designated work and they do it unobtrusively. Sai Kumar, as the baddie, goes over the top.Vidyasagar’s music is on typical lines --- giving scope for Vijay to shimmy around. The action sequences (Soundararajan’s camera work is very pleasing) are one of the high points of the film. As we said, blood flows like ketchup and sauce do in a Mc Donald outlet.Director Ramana has faithfully stuck to the Telugu original and come up with a gritty entertainer.

Tamil movie - 7G Rainbow colony - view online

Cast: Ravi Krishna, Sonia Agrawal
Direction: Selvaraghavan
Production: AM. Rathnam
Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja

PART- 1

PART - 2

PART - 3

Review:

It is difficult being different in typecast Kollywood. The entrenched set-up doesn't allow you to take chances or experiment. It takes one-pointed monkishness to do your own thing. But Selvaraghavan is luckily one. As we saw in Kadhal Kondein, he has a brooding streak in him and is ready to plough his own trail. With 7 G Rainbow Colony he proves that our assumptions about him are not misplaced.

Here he has taken a very difficult, and dare one say a taboo subject, and given it the veneer of acceptability. In a nutshell, to accept this film one needs to throw away one's hypocrisy and misplaced prudishness.

It is also subject that needs deft handling --- like a tightrope artiste he had to be careful with his steps; one wrong move, he would be down on the ground. In this rites of passage story, Selvaraghavan has probed enigmatic human emotions. It is a realistic narration of the happenings in the life of a middle class youth, who yearns and craves for a rich girl.

The story goes like this. Ravi Krishna, the elder son of Vijayan is an irresponsible youth, who bunks classes, fails in his exams, go behind girls and freaks out with his friends. Upon ridiculed by his father, he picks up a fight with him. At this moment enters Sonia Agrawal. Her family (a North-Indian one) takes up the flat 7G in the Rainbow Colony. As usual Ravikrishna like any other youngster in the area tries to impress her. He repeatedly goes behind her and cuts her name on his hand and tries to impress her with greeting cards and letters. But everything is futile.

He develops an inferiority complex and goes into a shell. Upon realizing his sorry fate, Sonia steps in to solve all his problems. She motivates him to come up in life and helps him find a job. The latter half is all about Sonia Agrawal falling in love with Ravi Krishna and her efforts to hold his hands in support. However, a series of events in their lives finally separate them and that makes the heroine to take a momentous decision in her life.

Debutant Ravi Krishna, son of producer A M Ratnam, plays the hero. He fits the next-door boy image very well and considering that it is his debut film, he needs a special pat for his performance.

Be it flirting behind the girls, antagonizing his father for chiding him, acting smart to impress the girl next door or getting mentally depressed at his lover's death, this young lad has come up trumps.

Not far behind is Sonia Agrawal. Though her character seems to be an improvisation of her role in Kadhal Kondein, she does it with ease. Especially towards the climax when she decides to share the bed with her lover, she has given her best on screen. She is indeed a screen-stealer in the movie.

A realistic portrayal of characters is the highlight of the movie. With able support from Yuvan Shanka Raja and cinematographer Aravind Krishna, Selvaraghavan has succeeded in leaving a lasting impression in 7G.A few dialogues, which one may find hard to digest, and a lengthy climax are the handicaps for the smooth flow of the movie. All said, Selvaraghavan deserves praise for trying out an unconventional theme and pulling it off with elan.More than anything else, the film is not run of the mill. This is certainly no pallid pastiche of songs and fights and if possible some story.

The story focuses the friendship of five youth, (three guys and two girls) thick buddies in an engineering college. They are determined to keep their friendship alive throughout their lives and share a dream of joining the same concern when they go to work. During a vacation, one of the friends, Ilango, goes home to his village. There he is forced to get married to his rustic cousin, Eashwari, by his tough disciplinarian father. Once back in college, though he hides the fact about his marriage, the marriage becomes public when relatives of Eashwari come to visit Elango.

Jeeva performs the role of 'Vishal'. The highlight is one of the lollu brothers, 'Manohar' performing the role of Shreya Reddy, the vamp in the movie. Swami Nathan plays the role of Shreya Reddy's brother. Manohar with his witty comments and playful gestures leaves everyone in splits with his portrayal of Shreya Reddy.

Yet another important feature of this week's Lollu Sabha is the climax that features a small song sequence in front of a temple where Manohar and Jeeva interchange roles and in the end, the deity in the temple escapes.
